255-Series Overflow / Drain
The HOBBS 255-Series Overflow / Drain Standpipe serves two functions, to provide overflow protection and to drain the fountain. It has a 2" or 3" brass standpipe that is made for a standard 16" water depth, with a 3" or 4" N.P.T. outlet base. Custom heights of overflow standpipes are available upon request. The top of the pipe is covered with a natural finished, cast bronze dome. It becomes a drain by lifting the o-ringed standpipe from the in-floor base. One 2" drain for every 350 square feet and one 3" drain for every 700 square feet are required for an outdoor fountain. This is to prevent rain from causing your pool depth to rise drastically. This overflow per square feet is just a rule of thumb and should only be used as a general guideline. If a fountain pool is to be located adjacent to a high rise building, then the overflow size and quantity requirements are considerably higher. Fountains should not be used as a catch basin for storms. Consult the project civil engineer for local area drain requirements. The only criteria for an indoor fountain is that the fill line should not exceed 1-1/2" when using the 2" overflow inlet. This will keep the inlet from being overloaded if the fountain fill is left on.
