268-Series Surface Skimmer
The HOBBS 268-Series Front Access Surface Skimmer is used to remove film and debris from the fountain’s water surface. The suction line for the skimmer is valved at the filter pump to allow both balancing of the flow of the skimmer with that of the anti-vortex/suction sump(s), and full suction through the vacuum fitting(s) during vacuuming operations. The nominal required flow of 10 to 30 gallons per minute (5 GPM minimum) draws water to the skimmer and collects debris. The removal basket should be cleaned periodically, depending on operating conditions. The basket can be removed from the front. Access to the removable top is not necessary. The trimmer plate balances the flow for optimum effectiveness with more than one skimmer. The number of skimmers required is based on the available filter capacity and pool configuration. One skimmer per 500 - 800 sq. ft. of pool surface area (lowest pool only of multilevel fountains) should be used. Normally, one or two skimmers is enough for a moderate-sized fountain (10,000 gallons or less). Skimmer locations are determined by the pool shape and water flow, as well as consideration of spray effects and filter discharges. Optimum location of skimmers and HOBBS #263-Series Eyeball Return Fittings can reduce stagnant areas where debris might otherwise collect. Skimmers are usually located in the lowest level of multilevel fountains. A minimum 12" thick wall is required when casting the skimmer in concrete. In fountains with less than this wall thickness, skimmers and the necessary block-outs can often be selectively located to provide the additional wall thickness without disturbing the architectural intent. |
